The ACL Play It Safe Kit has been designed to aggressively address the mechanics associated with non-contact lower extremity injuries and aid in improving athletic performance. This aggressive form of training should only be used with the non-injured athlete or athletes who are rehabilitating and have met the following criteria:
• More than 12 weeks post-operative – if ACL.
• Full pain-free ROM.
• Less than 1+ effusion with stroke test.
• More than 70 percent symmetrical quad strength.
• Cleared for plyometric activity.
• Previously and safely performed single leg activity.
Ideally, if an athlete is rehabilitating from an injury, an Athletic Movement Index™ or similar test should be performed prior to performing these exercises. This program is not sport-specific; it is movement-specific. The movements associated with risk are the same in soccer, football, volleyball, etc. Therefore, these exercises have been designed to specifically address movement patterns across all sports. Using this program in conjunction with a sport-specific training program is ideal for maximal performance impact.

The ACL Play It Safe Kit provides everything the athlete needs to perform the exercises with proper form throughout the season. The kit you purchased should include the following equipment:
• Theraband CLX Band – Allows for spiral technique for resisting valgus and IR in single leg stance.
• Theraband padded cuffs – Supports closed kinetic chain strengthening of the gluts and core.
• Stability trainer – Allows training of proprioception and stability in single limb performance.
• Biofreeze – Aides in reducing muscle soreness and irritation with in-season training.

The kit contains equipment and a complementary app featuring videos of exercises to implement a post-practice routine that focuses on agility training, strength and conditioning and performance training.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
There are more than 300,000 ACL injuries in youth athletics in the U.S. annually (AAOSM Annual Conference 2016). This devastating sports injury has an annual healthcare cost of more than $5 billion. This cost does not include the 20 percent of kids who reinjure in two years or the 79 percent of kids who have osteoarthritis in 12 years (Holm et al AJSM 2012). Sadly, one in four youths who tear their ACL before the age of 16 will retear it at some point in their athletic career (Wiggins et al AJSM 2016).
In addition to the impact on future health, there are huge societal issues that come with this injury. Studies show that high school athletes who tear their ACL prior to a Division I career are at an eightfold increased risk of ACL injury during their college career (Rugg et al AJSM 2014). These same athletes consume 50 percent more days on the DL and 50 percent more of the healthcare costs. Tearing your ACL also has an impact on future athletic performance. According to the research, only 50 percent of those who tear their ACL return to the same level of athletic performance (Anand et al AJSM 2016). This means, if you tear your ACL in high school, you are less likely to get recruited for college athletics.
We know from the research that more than 70 percent of these injuries are non-contact in orientation and there are predictable movement patterns which can be measured to identify those at risk for injury (Myers et al AJSM 2012). These same movement patterns are associated with all non-contact lower limb injuries. In addition, the same movements associated with risk are the same movement patterns that add to decreases in athletic performance (Myers et al J Strength Cond Res 2005).
Myers et al has shown that improvements in these movements result in decreases in injury risk and improvements in athletic performance. Considering this, no physical therapy provider has ever developed a national strategy to address this devastating injury until now.
The ACL Play It Safe Program is an exclusive and comprehensive program that is designed to be efficiently implemented as a part of an individual’s or a team’s practice and creates a foundation for athletic success that builds strength in key areas. By identifying certain movement patterns that put an athlete at risk, this non-operative program can help to mitigate injury and enhance athletic performance.
This program includes not only standardized exercise program, but also standardized equipment and instruction provided via videos in the ACL Play It Safe App.
