INTRODUCTION TO MIS
Management information system, or MIS, broadly refers to a computer-based system that provides managers with the tools to organize, evaluate and efficiently manage departments within an organization. In order to provide past, present and prediction information, a management information system can include software that helps in decision making, data resources such as databases, the hardware resources of a system, decision support systems, people management and project management applications, and any computerized processes that enable the department to run efficiently. An organized approach to the study of the information needs of an organization's management at every level in making operational, tactical, and strategic decisions. Its objective is to design and implement procedures, processes, and routines that provide suitably detailed reports in an accurate, consistent, and timely manner.A management information system should not only indicate the status of a business’s conditions, but also indicate why the conditions are improving or deteriorating. For example, an MIS should report performance relative to cost and profitable or unprofitable projects, while identifying individual accountability – both current and past. This can be done only if such reports are based on constantly updated information accessible to those in authority who are responsible for assessing and assuring it is used for timely decision-making.
