AnoxKaldnes PhD of the year: Elena Torresi who studied micropollutants removal in MBBR
Micropollutants are recalcitrant chemicals such as human pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs, hormones and other personal care products, which are found in the aquatic environment at low concentrations.
Although their concentrations usually are in a range of ng/L to µg/L, potential long-term adverse effects on humans and the ecosystem have been suspected.
Elena’s goal has been to elucidate the potential of biofilm systems, especially of MBBR processes, as biological treatment technology for the removal of micro pollutant in municipal wastewater treatment plants.
She conducted short terms and long-term experiments at lab scale, on a selection of 23 micropollutants among the most common, and studied both their removal and the effect of different optional strategies.
She concluded that thinner biofilm gives the best nitrification and degradation rates on most of these molecules. When it comes to denitrification, multiple denitrifying reactors systems offer the higher removal in the early stages. Her work also suggests the positive impact of easily biodegradable organic carbon on the biotransformation of several micropollutants. Finally, when comparing MBBR with conventional activated sludge systems, MBBR happened to have a beneficial effect on the removal of many of the studied molecules, including compounds targeted in the European watch list.

AnoxKaldnes has successfully held this course in Swedish for over 20 years and we now have the opportunity to offer this popular course in English to you. The course is on a basic level and treats topics from microbiology and different types of treatment processes to how to troubleshoot your treatment plant. Whether you are in sales, process design, commissioning or engineering design, you will enjoy the coverage of topics, the in-depth lectures and the hands-on microscope work.Half a day is spent at the microscope, where the participants, under guidance, will discover the exiting world of bacteria and micro animals.
