Always Wear Your Seat Belt. No Exceptions.
Seat belts save lives. According to the NHTSA, over
15,000 lives are saved each year because vehicle
occupants were buckled up at the time of the crash. Seat belts protect you in several different ways. They keep you inside the vehicle, restrain the strongest parts of the body, spread out the force of the collision, and help protect the brain and spinal cord. Reduce the risk of injury to your teen driver by teaching them to buckle up as soon as the get in a vehicle, every time.
Stay Off The Cell Phone!
In a time of emergency, a cell phone can be a lifesaver.
Unfortunately, it can also be the one of the biggest distractions your teen will face in the car. Encourage your teen to use their cell phone only in the event of an emergency, and make sure that your teen NEVER texts while driving. Apps are available that allow parents to block texts and notifications to keep mobile distractions
to a minimum.
Obey The Speed Limit
Speeding is a major contributor to fatal teen accidents.
Especially when driving on roads with lots of traffic or in
areas in which you are not familiar. Don't feel pressured to keep up with traffic if it seems like everyone else is flying by you. Driving a safe speed helps ensure your well-being, and helps you avoid costly traffic tickets and increased insurance premiums.
Practice Defensive Driving
Always be aware of the traffic ahead, behind, and next to you, and have possible escape routes in mind. Stay at least one car length behind the car in front of you in slower speeds, and maintain a larger buffer zone with faster speeds.
Having just a single passenger in the car can double a teen’s risk of causing a car accident. Friends are great company, but they can be dangerous distractions for teen drivers. Encourage your teen to drive alone, and to only accept rides from older, more responsible drivers when possible.
What To Do If You Are In An Accident
Immediately following an accident, there are several things that you will need to do in order to document the scene and ensure that you are protecting your rights to make a claim.
1. Call The Police
Sometimes after an accident the other driver will attempt to convince you that you don't need to call the police. They might offer their personal information and promise to pay for the damage to your vehicle. Do NOT agree to this. In order for the accident to be properly documented, the police need to file a detailed report. They will make a determination about who is at fault and issue citations accordingly. In addition, they will document any injuries that are evident at the scene and contact emergency personnel if needed. A police report is the first thing that an insurance company uses to determine who is at fault in a wreck. Without the official documentation, it is your word against the other driver's, and typically insurance companies will use that as an excuse to deny any liability on your claim.
2. Document The Scene
After you have contacted the police, the next vital step to protect your claim is to document the accident scene to the best of your ability. From the menu in our app, select 'Accident Scene'. We have included some useful tools that will enable you to gather important information and evidence about the crash. It's said that a picture is worth a thousand words. This is especially true after a motor vehicle accident. Photograph the accident area, damage to vehicles, and the front and back of the other driver's license and insurance card. Taking photos of any visible injuries is a great way to convey the severity of the collision to the insurance company. If given the opportunity, use the microphone or video tools to record any statements that the other driver has made about the accident, especially if it appears that the other driver might be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Use our ‘driver info’ tool to notate the insurance information about the other driver and any information that police provide to you. You can also use our map tool to mark where the accident happened and send your location to a friend or family member. You can also submit your accident information to our office immediately via our "Accident Form" tab in the main menu of the app.
3. Seek Medical Care
Depending on the extent of your injuries, you will likely need to receive treatment from a hospital emergency room. An ER doctor will document the injuries related to the accident and let you know what the next step in your care needs to be by determining the most beneficial type of doctor for you to follow up with. It is very important to your claim to document all of your injuries as quickly as possible.
4. Call Ken

Nugent, P.C. will help to ensure that the insurance company is giving you a fair deal, and will make sure that your rights to a claim are protected.
