Grange cheers FCC announcement of $20B rural broadband investment
On Wednesday, Jan. 8, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai presented to the other commissioners the final rules necessary to launch the new $20.4 billion Rural Digital Opportunity Fund. Following the announcement of the presentation, National Grange President Betsy Huber released a statement calling the move "an incredible win for our rural communities."Read the full statement here: “The announcement today by the FCC that the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund will move forward, allocating more than $20 billion for broadband expansion across the United States, is an incredible win for our rural communities. "With this plan, progress does not wait. Communities we know have been waiting for broadband service expansion will see the much-needed investment through Phase I of this fund. Those communities and areas still being identified as underserved through the FCC’s Digital Opportunity Data Collection will have funds directed to their aid in Phase II. This is an excellent way to continue to move the needle and ensure that every American can reliably and affordably compete in a global marketplace through access to real-time market data, web-based business initiatives and more. They can access information and educational resources to be more competitive in the job market and engaged as citizens. They can fill the gap in certain health services by accessing telehealth initiatives, and so much more. "From its inception in 1867, the National Grange has advocated for such equitable access for rural communities so that rural residents, often engaged in labor that helps to provide the abundant food, fiber and fuel enjoyed by much of the world, may have the same quality of life as their urban counterparts. Investments like this help to ensure such access and prove that our advocacy has not fallen on deaf ears. "Chairman Ajit Pai continues to make good on his promise to bridge the digital divide. The FCC and this administration should be applauded for all they have done to facilitate a more equitable digital landscape for rural citizens.
Grange applauds bipartisan committee vote in favor of USMCA
On Tuesday, Jan. 7, the National Grange issued a statement applauding the Senate Finance Committee's bipartisan vote in favor of the USMCA trade deal. The statement reads: "The National Grange applauds the Senate Finance Committee for its bipartisan vote in favor of passage of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. This move helps America’s farmers and ranchers, and the communities that depend on their prosperity. Trade is a vital element of the success of America’s agriculture sector, a gleaming spot in our nation’s finances that with pacts like this greatly improves our economy. This agreement helps solidify trade relationships with our neighbors who buy more made-in-America goods than any other market. Every sector of American agriculture benefits from this agreement, but especially the hard-hurting dairy industry as well as the poultry producers through new market access, and the wheat market as American wheat will be graded more favorably by Canada. The National Grange is looking forward to the swift passage of this agreement by the full Senate with a continued bipartisan approach."
