When the water temperature falls into the 70s the bass become active and shallow again..Its time to fatten up for the winter. Activity can be fast and furious as the food chain moves shallow.
My grandfather told me once, during a good fishing day, that when the fish are feeding they'll hit anything even a willow leaf and he put a leaf on a hook and caught a bass on top water. It was something to see as a child and it was one of many lessons I would learn thru 3 generations of fishermen.
Jigs can be fished like crankbaits & crankbaits like jigs. Versatility, confidence and presentation are your edge.
LIGHT ....COVER....WATER TEMP....OPPORTUNITY Bass have no eyelids and are more active on cloudy days, at night and hide in the shadows Water clarity also effects their activity as it can effect light penetration. Their lateral line detects activity in the water so they are highly sensitive to their surroundings , think of them as Bats that can see.
Lure selection and presentation has to be more selective during low activity periods ie.cold water, hot water, low O2 , bright sunny days . Be aware of their comfort zone and life cycle and adjust your tactics accordingly .
Our technology and equipment may change, however natures rules of survival are constant. Our success hinges our adaptation to their daily environment. Strike Zone is the distance bass are willing to travel to strike your lure, the better the conditions the larger the Strike Zone. Consider all the factors when choosing a lure and presentation.
Hot Summer Months
Fish will migrate to deeper cooler water as the water temps rise into the 80's and above. The thermocline will be their comfort zone.
River current and Lakes with grass that borders deep water can hold fish shallower during the hot summer months, Their feeding activity will be slower and less frequent than spring and fall. Fish steep banks and deep cover.
Bass have no eyelids and are sensative to light, they are ambush feeders they will be more active at night and hiding in the shadows during the day.
.Like us they can be couch potatoes when its to hot or to cold so you have to be specific and accurate in your presentation,,think small and natural. Imagine that most fish will be in 30 ft of water during the hottest and coldest seasons,,,In the lake you are fishing where would that be and how would they get there between spring and fall migrations.
Spring Water Temps 55 to 76
Its spring time the Bass are migrating from their deep water haunts to the shallows to feed and spawn. Bass travel in schools relative to size..Example 1 pounders and smaller stay together,, 2 to 3 pounders travel together,,etc, etc . Like deer herds you see in the fields. Does & yearlings,,,small bucks,,,,large bucks. Each having its own social group ..Like the mature buck a Hawg Bass will dominate the best feeding and spawning areas and return each year, if he is caught another Hawg will take its place. Bass are Active feeders during this time faster and more aggressive baits can be used. Early Bass can be found 5 to 7 ft ,when spawning temps are reached (mid 60's) they will be 2 to 3 ft deep.
POINT:: The migration happens in waves with different schools being in different stages or locations. Not all leaves fall off the trees at the same time.
When the water temperature reaches 48 and below suspended deep is their nature. Since their body temp ,is the same as the water, they become lethargic and only need to feed every a couple times a week.
When warm days create warm pockets of water they will travel up and down the water column to take advantage of the warmth. Fish ledges with slow baits.
Part of the fun of fishing is learning all the factors that effect their location and attitude. Bait spawns, crawfish molting, sunlight, cover, water conditions, angler pressure, all effect their attitude..
They can be couch potatoes just like us when its to hot or to cold. Finess and Entice they will have a small strike zone.
