A Journey from Fresh Start to University
Former SRC Fresh Start Student Sean
Sean then applied for the Fresh Start Programme in 2014, a personal development programme designed to build confidence, self-esteem and employability skills. Having previously disengaged from education Sean was pessimistic about his ability to stay in full time education, however his experience proved extremely positive.
Sean explained, “During my time on Fresh Start I learnt how to improve my presentation skills, how to be successful in interviews, how to network with people and live a healthy life. I was also provided with a work placement with the Student Activities Team at the college, experienced sampling different jobs and listened to lots of different inspirational guest speakers in Fresh Start. All this gave me my confidence back and I have my Lecturer Stephen Ferris to thank for this along with Paul Baxter my Learning Mentor. I was taught about what I needed in terms of employment and education and the staff worked tirelessly to repair everything about myself I'd lost over the years such as my confidence and self-esteem, I'd even go so far as to say that without their constant efforts I'd maybe not be here today and I'll always owe a piece of what I accomplished to Fresh Start. I think a Level 1 course can be underestimated but its more than the qualification you get its the positive impact the staff are capable of in their ability to relate to students from numerous backgrounds and integrate them into healthier surroundings whilst providing life changing opportunities.”
The Fresh Start Programme equipped Sean with the skills required to study at a higher level and Sean excelled, successfully completing the Adult Access Diploma at SRC and finishing that course as a Distinction Profile student.
Talking about his time studying Adult Access, Sean commented “The Adult Access course provided me with a fantastic environment in which I could build my academic skills from the ground up. The staff were all incredibly supportive and understanding in regards to the fact that I was relatively new to learning. They worked with me constantly to try and allow me to achieve things I'd thought I'd missed out on forever. I had a lot of different lecturers and I thank all those people for their input, quality teaching, belief in me and for providing me with the opportunity to get to University. I am forever grateful.”
Sean is now living in Belfast while attending Queens and feels he owes his current lifestyle to all the staff worked with him at the SRC.
SRC Submits Planning Application in Major Milestone for Craigavon
Proposed new SRC Campus at Craigavon
The Craigavon development, which will be located next to the recently-approved £30 million Craigavon Leisure Centre, close to the Craigavon Civic and Conference Centre and Rushmere Shopping Centre, will replace the Lurgan and Portadown campuses with a single new campus.
The campus will help transform education provision across the region, providing world-leading skills training and courses designed to support local and regional job creation and employment opportunities in key economic areas, including science, manufacturing, engineering, ICT, hospitality and tourism.
All three college campuses, which represent a total investment of around £95 million, are supported by the Department for the Economy and are expected to be completed in 2020.
SRC Chief Executive, Brian Doran, said:
“A concept first conceived in 2009, this Craigavon campus represents an enormous opportunity to support current and future generations to achieve their full potential in a fast-changing world that demands commercially-focused flexible skills, knowledge and training."It will also provide a modern and innovative environment that will enhance business and educational collaboration, support the delivery of new and exciting learning opportunities from entry level through to degree level and be used to strengthen our partnership with community- based organisations.”
The planning submission is the result of extensive pre-application engagement and dialogue with a wide range of local and regional stakeholders, community groups and residents.
Brian Doran added:“Our continued engagement with students, staff, businesses and the local and wider community will be our priority as we move forward to create an unrivalled educational offer in stunning, modern facilities which fit everyone’s needs.”
