We are asking you to help us figure out which lures work best in different underwater visual environments. We want to know which colors are more easily perceived by Walleye in algal conditions. We know that turbidity decreases the visual range of fish. However, because algal turbidity significantly reduces the light transmitted and the color of the water, this can cause even greater ecological shifts for the underwater visual environment. What does this mean for Walleye? Walleye rely on vision for most of their life history. They have to be able to see in order to forage, avoid predation (while they are young), and find mates. While they are able to see in low light conditions, we don’t know what the shift in color in congruence with the decrease in light will mean for the ability of Walleye to find prey. What does this mean for fishing? We are not actually sure what this means for fishing on Lake Erie. We do know that it is likely that Walleye will see things a bit differently. It is likely that they will not be able to see as far. It also may change the color that lures appear in the Lake, so it may shift the color lure that you will want to use, in order to maximize your likelihood of catching a Walleye.
