Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) is an overuse injury common in distance runners, causing lateral knee pain. Best practices and treatment methods are conventional and can cost a runner, months of training. Due to the nature of the injury, pain will often reappear once training has resumed, after a rest period. It is critical to examine specific regimens for runners who experience ITBS, and develop a comprehensive program that incorporates and evaluates interval training, tempo runs, long runs, terrain, cross training, gait retraining, shoe type and, running surfaces which will reduce injury-reserve time and help prevent the reoccurrence of ITBS once training has resumed.
