The iconic ghost-sign murals preserved on the walls of the original buildings were painted in the 1960’s with highly durable pigments on the outside walls of the old distillery. They were commissioned by United Distillers Ltd.

The block is surrounded by four streets; Pickles Street, Rouse Street, Johnston Street and Danks Street and stands only a few yards from the sea shore by which it secures the great advantage of a free water supply for cooling purposes...A noteworthy feature of this manufacture is that the liquors are all sent out under the name and brand of Messrs Joshua Bros., who face the market as colonial distillers, have nailed their colors to the mast, determined to win by the purity of their liquors. The erection of such splendid works as this distillery at Port Melbourne is a credit to Victoria, and the article turned out from an establishment so well provided must command the approval of a discerning public. The firm have been fortunate in securing manager Mr H Breidahl, a gentleman of large experience in European distilleries, including that of Haig and Co., of London, the largest distillery in the great metropolis, where he held the post of manager."- Age February 9, 1889.
